When preparing the skin for make-up application, there are three main steps to take in order to make sure that the face is clean; cleansing, toning and moisturising. Each of these steps are important for different reasons.
Equipment used:
Cleanser
Toner
Moisturiser
Cotton wool pads
Cotton wool buds
SKIN CONSULATIONS
Look at the natural state of your model’s
skin
Look at their skin tone and skin type,
whether it is dry, oily or a mixture of both
Define their eye shape and colour
Check for any skin infections or
contraindications that might affect or change the way that you work on them
Ask them if they are on any medication, as
this might affect the way that their skin is
Ask if they have any allergies
How to CLEANSE, TONE and MOISTURISE
o
CLEANSING (breaks down the
make-up particles):
Put cleanser on two cotton wool pads and work
in upwards strokes all over the face
NOTE: if you are working on a male model you should not use cotton wool,
use tissues instead as the cotton wool may get caught in their stubble
Ensure that they keep their eyes closed when
working around the eye area
Once you have removed the majority of it, put
some cleanser onto the back of your hand and transfer some onto cotton wool
buds, using them to carefully remove the make-up right up close to the
eye. When doing the top lash; keep their
eyes closed. When doing the bottom lash;
get your model to look up so that you can get right up close to the lash line
You should cleanse the skin until it is
definitely clean of all make-up and no more is coming off on the cotton wool
pads
Motions used when cleansing:
è
Wipe up the neck
è
Across the jaw
è
Up the cheeks
è
Over the top lip
è
Across the nose
è
Across the forehead
è
Back and forth in the eyebrows
è
Around the eyes to finish
o
TONING (takes off the cleansing
lotion):
Toning takes off any excess make-up particles
that may have been missed with the cleanser
To tone, you use the same techniques as with
cleansing
Put the toner on two cotton wool pads and
work in an upward motion all over the face
REMEMBER: take the toner up to the hairline, but make sure you don’t get it
in the hair
o
MOISTURISING (helps prepare the
skin for base make-up):
To moisturise, put a small amount of
moisturizer, slightly bigger than the size of a pea, in the palm of your hand
Using your fingertips rub it into the skin in
upwards motions once again
REMEMBER: if you put too much moisturizer on, the base won’t sit and will go
streaky
NOTE: if you are working on a model with dry skin then you should advise
them to exfoliate three times a week
