Health and Safety as a Make-Up Artist

Health and safety acts a hair and make-up artist should be aware of:
Health and safety at work act, 1974
Cosmetic products safety regulation, 1989
Personal protective equipment at work regulation, 1992
Control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH), 2003

Steralisation:
After doing any hair or make-up all of your equipment used should be steralised before using again on a different model
Ways in which you can steralise your equipment include sprays, liquid cleaners, chemical substances or UV radiation equipment

Areas in the studio:
Check for spillages of products or water.  If any are found clean up immediately
Work stations should be kept tidy at all times to avoid knocking things over and to help you work more effectively
Any trails of wires should be kept in a neat route to avoid causing anyone to trip over them

At your work station:
Always have your hair up and off of your face
Always have your mirror lights turned on
Always put a gown on your model to protect their clothes from any products that you might use on them
Always put couch roll down on your workstation shelf before you set out your brushes and products.  NEVER put them straight onto the surface
Always wash your hands thoroughly before treating your model and them in between each person that you make up.  You should also wash your hands afterwards
REMEMBER: always carry hand sanitiser in your kit
